Just to clarify the current status of ISO 2788-1986, it is indeed the
latest International Standard, but a project (named ISO NP 25964) is
just now getting under way to revise it, together with ISO 5964, basing
the revision on the British Standard BS 8723.

As to ANSI/NISO Z39.19, it never has had a formal relationship with ISO
2788. The developers of the first edition, in 1974, certainly took pains
to maintain compatibility with ISO 2788. They did not, however, choose
to adopt ISO 2788 as a national standard, as was done in some other
countries. (In the UK, for example, ISO 2788 and BS 5723 became one and
the same thing, and remained so for two decades until BS 5723 was
superseded by BS 8723-1 and BS 8723-2 in 2005.) Successive updates of
Z39.19 have retained their independence from ISO 2788.

Let us hope we can continue to have as much compatibility as possible.
Stella
(Project Leader, ISO NP 25964)
