Actually, in IE6, if you check the menu
"Display > Character Encoding > More Encodings > Western Europe > Occidental ISO-8859-1"
everything is OK - except the "view source" display which is still incorrect. Maybe your
default browser encoding is ISO-8859-1?

In any case, the best is not to change the encoding set when you process a file through
various tools, and make sure all those tools are actually conformant with the encoding
set, not only display it properly. Having struggled with that lately in a variety of
multilingual projects involving a lot of applications working together, I know it's
something very tricky, with a lot of pitfalls. UTF-8 all along seems the best choice, so
XHTML files in UTF-8 at the end should certainly be better IMO.
