Let's take a more concrete example. Suppose you've been using DCAT 1.0 for a long time and now want to include APIs in your catalog. You make a profile of DCAT that also pulls in API descriptors from Schema.org's Data Catalog, so it's a profile of both DCAT and Schema.org.
