@makxdekkers re your last sentence, yes this is why I'm in favour of starting with the less-demanding option (in terms of formal semantics) To clarify, I also think that if we go to SKOS we should also have a set of roles to start with, just as you mention "the provided set of sub-properties which is cheap".
