Its just that those front end apps are built into the servers that implement the API, and I suspect (unfortunately I don't have hard data...) that a lot of users use those web apps to get the data they need, so its really useful to be able to provide links to them in metadata; currently in the ISO world the distribution is most commonly used for that.
