Subject: [Minutes] 2015-02-10 A11Y TF: Digital Publishing Interest Group Teleconference

Hello A11Y DPUB TF,

We didn’t take minutes in IRC but here is a recap of what happened.

Attendees: Charles LaPierre, Deborah Kaplan

We both felt that the fact that we went through most of the WCAG specifications and marked the ones relevant to DPUB hasn’t really helped us. The work done so far is valid but we don’t think will get us to our ultimate desired goal of a W3C Note to Publishers on how to produce accessible publications, since most of the techniques apply to DPUB. We can definitely use this as an appendix to our note and possibly even refer to the various techniques as footnotes in our document we create.

It is clear that what publisher’s want is some official set of guidelines on how to make their publications accessible.

Deborah suggested that this A11Y DPUB TF team up with the BSIG (Book Industry Study Group) and Charles suggested that we may want to start with their accessibility guidelines for EPUB documents that can be expanded to any form of Digital Publishing be it EPUB3, Web-based, PDF, etc…

Charles who is a member of the BISG will bring this idea of jointly working together to create one document that summarizes how to create an accessible publication. Also in this document we want to spell out the success criteria for publishers and different levels of what is required to be “accessible”. Ie. Minimum Bar, the Practical Bar, and the Olympic Bar.

We need to get something drafted up and then ask for input from the broader DPUB IG for comments.

I think we should call this document “Digital Publishing Born Accessible Guidelines and Recommendations"

Charles will be on vacation starting Feb 13 - 22, so our regular scheduled meetings on the 13th, 17th and 20th will be cancelled and resume the week of the 23rd.

Charles LaPierre will be at CSUN March 4th and 5th. If anyone else from this Task Force is also going to CSUN it would be great to set up a F2F meeting there. I know George Kerscher will also be there. Let see if we set something up ahead of time between those who will be there.

Thanks.
