I'm not sure where you got this information from, Android uses IIO, 
same backends that are used in CrOS and Linux for which we already 
have adaptation. I'm pretty sure that even als is using polling 
frequency. You can check [als 
driver](https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/msm/+/android-msm-angler-3.10-marshmallow-dr1.5/drivers/iio/light/hid-sensor-als.c),
 on top of it, there is HAL and then dalvik with bindings to native 
side, so, I'm pretty sure that frequency is passed all the way from 
java to driver level.
