I do not see why this should result in the same lines, find attached the output I expect.
This output is produced by Firefox 3.0.5, IE8 RC1 and Chrome 1.0.154.46 as well.
Opera 9.62 doesn’t display the whitespaces.

 

Is the test incorrect?
