Hi Simon,

I see that Lars has answered some of these questions in another email. As you may know, Lars has already done significant work in this area and has developed a method for HDR image colour management using ICC V4 that seems to be quite robust. I believe that this is used for some aspects of colour management in Adobe products (and probably others) and that a similar approach may be useful for your application.

As we speak, I am not aware of any iccMAX implementation that is supported by more than one company. The main problem is that iccMAX has a very broad range of functionality and typically only a subset of this functionality is required for any given application domain. The ICC is currently developing a set of interoperability conformance specifications (ICSs) that may address this problem. These define requirements for profile creation and colour conversion software for a number of application areas.

On the other hand, some aspects of ICC V4 (and V2) are widely supported and these may provide a sufficiently useful starting point for your work. My suggestion would be to start with V4 and look at what can be achieved with that. I would also recommend that any limitations in the workflow be identified, as such a list could be used to inform the development of an ICS for HDR imaging. If it would be of interest, I would be very happy to work with you on this approach.

Apologies for the delays in replying to this list, I’ve been busy with events over the summer period.

Could I just ask:

  1.  What the security concerns are with using ICCmax calculator functions?
  2.  How far are we from widespread deployment of ICCmax?

Could I also check my understanding of the issues?

  1.  ICC v4.0 uses D50 as its PCS white point and 1D LUTs?
  2.  ICCmax allows D65 white points and a calculator function which allows parameters to be passed – this is useful for the Display transform which varies for different screen brightnesses and surround brightnesses.

Well, that’s a problem since many CMMs will choose to avoid the calculator feature of ICC.Max for security concerns.  I would think that calculator would be a last resort for any new profile that is created.

Not algorithmicly (IE via a parametric curve).  You can create an interpolated lut for a specific display luminance.

Additonally - in V4 - getting it to scale based on relative luminance will require you to use the absolute intent and agreement (outside the spec) on what the media white point should be.
