ICANN & Blockchain

Hello All,

The following URL is a response from ICANN to a request that I submitted last month under its Document Information Disclosure Policy asking for “all initiatives, documents and research by ICANN dealing with blockchain and distributed ledger technology [DLT] in connection with the [Domain Name System] DNS and other unique identifiers schemes/frameworks.” See https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/didp-20170214-1-palage-request-2017-03-16-en

While ICANN’s response was largely non-responsive to my inquiry, I found the following disclaimer rather intriguing.

To the extent that there have been any personal preliminary interest or individual research conducted relating to blockchain and DLT, those documents are subject to the following DIDP Defined Conditions of Nondisclosure and are therefore not appropriate for public disclosure: …

Information that relates in any way to the security and stability of the Internet, including the operation of the L Root or any changes, modifications, or additions to the root zone.

So while I believe Tony and Melvin’s concerns about the potential attack vectors in namecoin are valid, I found it really interesting to see that it is likely that ICANN is experimenting with blockchain in connection with the L Root based upon its qualified non-response.

Best regards,

Michael
