First BDE workshop completed [via BDE-Health, demographic change and wellbeing Community Group]

n the health and demographic change societal challenge, we held our first
BigDataEurope workshop in Brussels on 21st May 2015. The aim of the workshop was
to introduce the BDE project to key stakeholders, spend some time discussing key
challenges in this domain with invited experts, then breakout into groups to
highlight challenges and requirements for the BDE aggregator platform building.

Key challenges in applying big data approaches to healthcare and demographic
change that were identified included:

how large scale data interoperability in this domain is effected by standards,
vocabularies and ontologies
veracity and provenance of data sources as the key to building user trust
standardisation approaches required to ensure interoperability

being clear about data areas where standardization would be a challenge owing
to gaps in existing tooling

how advances in visualization are needed to gain impact and value from big
data
the importance of privacy and security especially as this relates to
patient/private data
how policy is influenced by smart ideas and innovation
establishing, recognizing and sharing best practice
