thoughts on research, funding

Some of us may have been unsuccessful in previous bids, possibly because
too ambitious
but if we start 'small' requesting small funds, maybe we get better
chances?

I am putting together some proposals
1. to get our proposed work funded (since the published resources are
going to be in the public domain)
2. for a Journal/special issue

I am not sure if this topic should be discussed offlist with anyone
interested (in which case reply privately), or on list.
(in which case reply on ist) Thoughts?

Anyone on this list interested to collaboration, or has experience with
successful funding calls
Ideally with a PhD AND academic affiliation, but I think industry
experience is also okay for some calls

The publisher I approached is asking for

- your vision of the journal: aims and scope, target audience, long term
objectives
- competition in the subject area: other strong journals (traditional and
open access journals)
- size of the target market: e.g. number of specialists or number of
research groups in the area (we don't need accurate numbers, of course,
just a general idea)
- information on available funding for research in this area (e.g. research
grants) in different regions or countries (we don't need accurate numbers,
of course, just a general idea)
- your plan regarding the EiC and Editorial Board and possibilities of
promotion.
- any societies or organizations that could support to start the journal.
