From Understanding 3.2.6 it is quite clear the intent is to make users "aware" of status messages by notifying AT. 
It appears the intent is to help  users perceive content by making it "adaptable" by adding a suitable role / property via markup. 
Does this SC not fall within the purview of G 1.3 then?
