my thoughts on candidates

Hi again,

Here's the notes that I made, re. the various candidates. These
are just my thoughts, drawn from the various bios; clearly, I may
have overlooked/mistaken things, and it's not meant to be a character
judgement!!

But, in the interest of discussion, here are those thoughts.

Preferrably, read them after you've had time to do your own
thinking on the questions...

Leslie.

0. Specific background data requested

Internet technologies
JFA[Strong] . particularly hands-on in X-Windows workstation

HS [Strong] . broadband internetworking & telephony
                . product & standardization efforts
. BUT: focused on technology/product development,
not so much operational experience, or experience
                  at the naming/number level
OJ [Strong] . extensive (spanning decades), though primarily from
the position of writing about/using (areas: DNS in
                  particular)

                  (Norway, England, Japan, US....)

1. Internet Culture

Vision -- ICANN & Internet
JFA[Strong] . universal access -- above & below IP layers
. ICANN challenges: stabilize organization &
                  establish trustworthiness; contribute to deployment
                  of a truly international infrastructure
HS [Strong] . convergence through IP
                . continued open, non-monopolistic services
. "to maintain the Internet´s decentralized structure,
to lever the interoperability provided by the Internet
                  protocols and ensure further evolvability."
. ICANN challenges: finances, and positioning/role
OJ [Unknown]

Develop appropriate partnerships with wide variety of organizations:
experience with wide variety of organizations
JFA[Strong] . as chair of W3C, and W3C confernce committees,
has had to bring many organizations together
. developed business liaisons for INRIA
. BUT: these are all fairly focused within tech/dev
                  organizations
HS [Unknown] . works within Siemens & specific technical bodies
OJ [Strong] . multiple international conferences (Interop founder)
                  Asia & Pacific..., etc

Adaptable, in the light of ICANN's evolving role: demonstrated
breadth of experience
JFA[Moderate] . quite a range, within a specific field
HS [Moderate] . semiconductor physics research to broadband
product development -- quite a range within a
                  specific field
OJ [Strong] . has written about, experienced, covered many
                  areas,
. BUT, claim is technical focus, a-political (some
                  political appreciation is necessary...!)

2. Accountability -- to Internet community and Society at large

Public accountability/openness: e.g., board experience, etc
JFA[Strong] . don't know about openness, but has board experience
(ICANN, Ilog) and other positions of responsibility
(W3C Chair, International WWW Conference Committee)
HS [Strong] . don't know about specific board experience, but
has evidently held positions of responsibility
                  within Siemens, for eg.
OJ [Strong] . APIA board,

Legacy regulations -- understanding/appreciate/awareness of
differences between and across countries: experience with
  international bodies
JFA[Unknown] . though, obviously some exposure through I year on
                  ICANN board
HS [Unknown]
OJ [Moderate] . don't know about awareness of existing legacy
situations, but certainly an understanding of
cultural differences, and the effects of bringing
                  multiple cultures together

Internationalization: experience/demonstrated awareness
JFA[Unknown]
HS [Unknown]
OJ [Moderate] . don't see demonstrated experience, but certainly
that multilingual, multicultural experience is real

3. ICANN as organization

Business model: experience with business/financial plans (theory
and practice!)
JFA[Moderate] . has primarily worked in research; though he did
work on business liaisons for INRIA
HS [Strong] . Extensive corporate (and corporate consulting)
                  experience
OJ [Unknown]
