Then why are people still using GIF for non-animated images when PNG is
superior in that area? Using PNG even avoided the whole LZW patent
fury, and that was part of the reason for its invention, but even then
most people never switched once it became a standard.

Same reason most people still use Windows and not Linux. Sure Linux
is superior but why go to all the effort of learning a new tool when
the old tool works (maybe not well, but it works).
Commercial web sites do not and will not (for some time at least) use
PNG as not all browsers support it properly (actually, none support it
100% and bug-free). This could mean lost customers thus lost revenue.
Thousand in lost sales versus $50 for a software licence - which do
you choose.

The patent ends in a few years so GIF is likely to remain the format
of choice, at least for small low-detail images.

JPEG will probably remain standard for 320*240 images. I expect PNG to
take off for large hi-res images. These images however are not used
for normal web browsing and rather for artwork or wallpapers.
