I have found it useful to have a pattern, call it %?, that matched '/*'
or the empty string, as in
	http://www.w3.org/pub%?

that matches
	http://www.w3.org/pub
	http://www.w3.org/pub/
	http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/
but not
	http://www.w3.org/public
