Web Accessibility Specialist

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) <http://www.w3.org/WAI/> is looking for a full-time Web Accessibility Specialist to be based in Europe, with particular focus on the development of educational resources supporting the implementation of the W3C/WAI Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.

This is an opportunity for a talented individual to lead the development of newly designed educational resources as part of the internationally recognized W3C/WAI solutions for web accessibility. We are seeking an individual with a minimum of three years' experience in accessible web development and information design, an excellent understanding of WCAG 2.0 and web technology, excellent communication skills, a passion for educating others on accessible web development, and enthusiasm for the mission and spirit of W3C <http://www.w3.org/Consortium/mission>.

Responsibilities:
The individual will develop interactive educational resources that guide developers, project managers, and other audiences to learn about and effectively implement WCAG 2.0 in different development contexts. These resources will be developed through the W3C/WAI Education and Outreach Working Group (EOWG) <http://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/> and in coordination with other W3C/WAI Working Groups, in particular the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group (WCAG WG) <http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL/>. He or she will be responsible for analyzing the requirements, designing, and developing these resources through the collaborative and consensus-based W3C process with consideration for the broad variety of stakeholder perspectives.

Requirements:
* Development experience with WCAG 2.0, WAI-ARIA, and HTML5; on mobile is a plus
* Practical experience with information design, communication, and presentation
* Understanding of the role of web accessibility standards and accessibility support
* In-depth knowledge of accessibility requirements across different types of disabilities
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; samples requested
* Ability to develop and refine proposals in response to iterative feedback, and to build consensus among disparate perspectives
* Ability to work independently with remote peers in a highly distributed setting
* European working permit and ability to travel internationally
* Experience working in an international and distributed organization is a plus

Work starts 1 September 2013.

This contractor position is affiliated with the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) <http://www.ercim.eu/>, the W3C host for Europe, in Sophia-Antipolis – France. Remote work-from-home might be acceptable in specific circumstances.
